With All My GI Bills, How Many Months Of Education Benefits Do I Have?

Your rating: None Average: 4.5 (2 votes)

Q: Can I use 12 months of MGIB, Chapter 1607 and  still have 36 months of  Chapter 33, (Post 9/11 GI Bill)? Is it MGIB 1607 transferrable like the Post 9/11?

A: No the MGIB is not transferable as is the Post 9/11 GI Bill. Just keep in mind that to be eligible to transfer the Post 9/11 GI Bill to dependents, you have to serve at least six years on active duty and agree to serve an additional four years. Then you have to request the transfer while you are still on active duty; once you are out, it is too late to make the transfer.

If you used 12 months of your Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) and then switched to the Post 9/11 GI Bill, only the same number of months you have left on the MGIB would transfer over to the New GI Bill. To get the additional 12 months of education benefit, you have to first exhaust your 36 months of MGIB and then switch to the Post 9/11 GI Bill. Under the Rule of 48, of you qualify for two GI Bills, your combined maximum education benefits is limited to 48 months. As far as you last question, no Chapter 1607 (REAP) is not transferable.
